Nutrition

Why is proper nutrition so important?

The old adage of “you are what you eat” is very correct. Your body will look, feel, and perform the way that you eat. What you fuel your body with accounts for roughly 70% of your overall fitness results. Regardless of whether you're trying to lose bodyfat, gain muscle, or perform better in athletics, nutrition is the number one component of getting the results you want.

Weight loss or gain is simple math. If you eat more than you burn, you gain weight. If you burn more than you eat, you lose weight: there is no “magic pill.” Most people have a very hard time losing weight, however, because they forget the remaining 30%. The simplest way to look at it is this: you need to MOVE more! And if you're exercising frequently and consistently and still aren’t losing bodyfat as fast as you want, then you need to eat less. That’s really all there is to it: MOVE MORE, EAT LESS.

The types of foods you eat are just as important as how much you eat, though, and can drastically improve your results. Ideally, you want low density, high nutrient foods. This means that you can eat a large amount of these foods, without consuming a lot of calories, and benefit from their rich nutrient content. Ask yourself these simple questions; if you eat 1500 calories of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein sources don’t you think you’ll get better results than if you eat the same amount of calories in soda, fast food, and potato chips? Which diet do you think your body will respond to better?

While portion sizes and ratios of foods that you eat are extremely important, the number one rule is to ALWAYS eat proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in every meal. No matter what! Carbohydrates raise your blood sugar and your body releases insulin to counteract that. Insulin is an incredibly important hormone in our bodies, but it also tells our bodies to store calories instead of burning them. When you eat protein it releases another hormone, glucagon, which helps to counteract the storing signal from insulin. In practice, this combination helps you burn more calories from your meal instead of storing them. Finally, many of the hormones in your body come from fats, so it's important to make sure they’re present in every meal because hormones, as you see, act as the messengers of our bodies.
